Business & Administration Level 2 Apprenticeship

Case Study: Iona

Learners Story

Iona is 27 years old and currently works part-time for Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity) a registered charity, established in 1981, based in Central London.

Iona has few GCSEs, as her learning and other difficulties held her back slightly. Iona spent a lot of time in hospital as a child, with operations and recovery time, so didn’t have the opportunity to catch up. She is currently working on her Business and Administration level 2 Apprenticeship.

 __Iona’s comment

“The support from Karen, my assessor from BMR (UK) Ltd, has been a great  help, it has made the NVQ so much easier to do.

If I thought that there was no help for me I don't suppose I would even think  about doing an NVQ Apprenticeship."

Iona has been in her current role of Administration Assistant since October 07. This is only the second job Iona has held. She took a break after having her son, 9 years ago. She started at Sands with very little knowledge of how an office or administration role works effectively. Iona has Hemiplegia, a condition she suffered from since birth. Hemiplegia causes a paralysis of one side of the body,

Iona’s paralysis affects her right side of the body; hence she is now left handed. Iona has learnt to live with her ‘disability’ by being able to walk unaided; Iona also has Dyslexia, a common affect of her physical ‘disability’..

Retail Management

Case Study: Kandiah Krishnamohan

Learners Story

This story is about a learner Kandiah Krishnamohan who works in the retail store Juliet's – a hair and beauty products shop employing less than 50 people.

Kandiah Krishnamohan began work in 1993 in the UK coming from Sri Lanka at the age of 33. He started as manager of Juliet’s Hair and Beauty shop in Harlesden West London. He was given an induction to the company policies and procedures and, other than a training course in IT, had no formal qualifications. BMR (UK) Ltd approached Juliet's to give a presentation about the value and benefits of training. Krishna was impressed with the opportunity of learning and became enthusiastic at the prospect this could bring to not only himself but to his staff.

Krishna approached the owner of the shop and informed him of the opportunity and how he felt the staff, and ultimately the company, would greatly benefit from training offered by an NVQ. The result was that Krishna and eight of his staff were enrolled onto a retail NVQ Level 2 training programme.

Krishna was especially keen to learn more about health and safety and was given extensive training and learning materials by the BMR assessor, which included use of BMR’s laptop to access the Internet. Krishna put together a health and safety training manual to be used by the company and all the staff and also to meet all health and safety legal requirements. Krishna updated this on a monthly basis. He was happy to have the confidence and knowledge to be able to set these new procedures into the company.

Krishna has also expressed his pleasure at the learning he undertook. For example he is able to explain the legal requirements of the Sales of Goods Act to his customers.

Krishna then moved to a larger store within Juliet’s and a more demanding management role. BMR (UK) Ltd has continued its relationship with the company and, when the opportunity of offering Level 3 training came along as a result of this programme, was able to offer Krishna further training to meet the demands of his new role. As part of this programme, Krishna has started the NVQ Management at Level 3 and has just completed four units. He is now half way through the course. Krishna continues to see the benefits of his training and has been able to pass on his knowledge gained from the NVQ to other members of staff in Juliet’s. Krishna is also now the mentor/supporter for the other staff taking their NVQs.
